And so the race begins. In a staggered start for the Premier Leagueseason’s anticipated front runners, first Arsenal, then Liverpool, and nowManchester City have commenced the season with victories.

None of the displays was particularly convincing, but it was all about avoiding a false start.

On Monday night it is Chelsea’s turn to try to fly out of the blocks.

Ominously for their rivals, City looked assured, coping with the occasional Newcastle United squalls whipped up by R©my Cabella, a bundle of tricks on his debut, the powerful Moussa Sissoko and by the exciting substitute, Ayoze P©rez. Newcastle can take heart from the performance, if not the result, their 10th successive league defeat by City.

For those who have wagered revenue or reputation on Chelsea to lift the trophy next May, these 90 minutes at St James’ Park made uncomfortable viewing. Unrecognisable from the listless collection of individuals who lost last week’s Community Shield, City were far sharper.

Huddersfield 2-2 Newcastle: Remy Cabella rescues draw for Magpies

New signing Remy Cabella struck two minutes from time to rescue a 2-2 draw for Newcastle against Huddersfield.

The Magpies, who gave Daryl Janmaat his debut, took the lead through Emmanuel Riviere’s third pre-season goal.

But the Championship side responded well and turned the game through Radoslaw Majewski and Jon Stead.

It was left to Cabella to spare the Premier League side’s blushes when he latched on to a quick free-kick from Ayoze Perez and lobbed Joe Murphy.

Premiership : Loic Remy : Liverpool agree £8.5m fee with QPR for striker

Liverpool have agreed an £8.5m fee with QPR to sign France striker Loic Remy.


The bid activated a release clause in the contract of the 27-year-old, who spent last season on loan at Newcastle, scoring 14 Premier League goals.

He is now expected to join the Reds on a pre-season tour in the United States to have a medical and discuss personal terms before completing the move.

Remy was part of the France squad that reached the quarter-finals of the 2014 Fifa World Cup in Brazil.

He moved to Newcastle on loan after QPR’s relegation from the Premier League in 2013.
