Debutant Tyrone Barnett hit a late equaliser for Shrewsbury against Southend to keep up his new side’s unbeaten home League Two record.
But it could not prevent the morning leaders being knocked off the top, as Burton and Wycombe both won.
Barnett fired home with his left foot from inside the penalty area with five minutes remaining.
Midfielder Jack Payne had put Southend ahead when he found the top-right corner with a right-foot shot.
Shrewsbury still boast the best home record in the country, having now won 12 and drawn three of their 15 league games, conceding just six goals.
